A birthday well chosen! The longest day of the year gives maximum time to celebrate, eat cake and play. Harris turned two on 21 June. It helps of course if your owner remembers! He's come some way..

Climbingmandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01520515442747384802noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25601534.post-66518656137763819522014-04-11T07:55:00.001+01:002014-04-11T07:55:11.837+01:00RitualsWe all have our routines. Our rituals. That guide us through daily life and ground us. The ferguson household is no different. This is my favourite one.

It's called sharing the crusts. Harris and Horatio sneak out of bed as Scott slumbers and they join me in the kitchen as I read the news and blogs on the iPad over an espresso and two slices of toast. One buttered with jam and the other with peanut butter. Always. And the boys enjoy the quiet ritual of a few small crusts (not many mind as I like them too!). As soon as the last morsel of toast is gone, they vanish. Back to the bedroom for another few previous moments of sleep before they are dragged out for another ritual. Walk #1 of the day with Scott. That's another story though.

Happy Friday.Climbingmandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01520515442747384802noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25601534.post-56732625071102475452014-03-12T00:17:00.000+00:002014-03-12T00:17:06.659+00:00Happy birthday Horatio And sorry my boy, I'm away on another work trip. Hope you had a good day, and that Scott and Alison spoilt you (but not too much, you are still on a diet!)
Three years old today! Yes, you were very tiny back then!
Cue the annual family holiday to the Lakes. Except this year was rather different from all previous years.... As Scott and I surprised everyone by announcing we were getting married. And then did just that! With just 36 hours notice both families got themselves suited and booted for the ceremony in Langholm, Scotland followed by a pub lunch in Threlkeld in the Lakes.

Sneaky but also inspired! The last six weeks have been a covert whirlwind of planning, internet shopping and even a flying visit to the Lakes to check it all out. Of course dogs featured heavily on the big day. 18 humans vs 6 woofers including Harris and Horatio who were kitted out in matching tweed bow ties. Horatio of course lost / disposed of his on the wedding walk.
Surely not!I was in Zurich this week for a couple of days with work. Burns night tends to unleash a circuit of hospitality events and quite a bit of haggis. Zurich is a marvellous city of similar size to Edinburgh. In addition to beautiful architecture and a stunning location on Zurichsee, it is very wealthy.
On leaving my hotel on the first morning, I had to stop and do a double take. Was that not Horatio in that shop?! I didn't even know his passport was up to date!
Work commutes are completed in silence in the dark. We hit the sack by 10 most nights yet awaken nine hours later unrefreshed, cranky and tired. Don't get me wrong, we are getting out there, exercising, walking the boys and trying to put a positive spin on life but boy, it's a struggle. I'm celebrating every extra 2 minutes of day light and have convinced myself I can notice it. To help me overcome my funk, here's a few things I'm celebrating this morning:

My first snow drop is out.

We go on holiday in three weeks time to the Lakes.

Harris and Horatio keep us on our toes

Our central heating has finally been switched on!! We really need to organise a House Warming, if just to laugh at the word play.

I was going to post a photo of our new radiators but that's a bit bland. Instead, here are a few pics from our trip to Cornwall before Christmas. Harris is turning into a real running dog. Seven milers are a breeze for him. Preferably off road and off the lead with a few treats up my sleeve. Literally.

Selfie. Or is it an ourselfie?

Can we perhaps fly this bit?

My cycle home from work is now in the dark. The cycle to work soon will be too. The wood burning stove is repaying the investment. And Harris is reluctant to leave the house in the morning. It must be nearly winter. Poor Harris feels the cold terribly with just a fine short haired coat to protect him from the elements. Horatio has his full blown double wool coat so he's just starting to feel a normal temperature again after the summer.

What are we to do with Harris? His skinny rain coat just doesn't cut it and his lovely hand knit snood doesn't come down over his coxis.

We've been eying up various models on other vizlas but I'm afraid I baulk at £84 for a quilted coat. Scott is adamant he can create one. I'm off to Barcelona today for a trade show. I can hardly wait to see the result...
I'm sure it must be a recognised condition. If this continues, I'll soon progress onto wreaths and garlands. Horatio loved the pumpkin carving and insisted on helping out. Every pumpkin needs a good lick and nibble round the edges :-)
No murmurring please, Horatio! If you have something to say, I'd prefer you said it out loud and got it off your chest. So, your recent moodiness, lethargy and general 'old man' behaviour isn't indicative of terrier teenage troubles? Nope, the wee dude is sick!! HHH had a sore something (in a private place) recently so I marched him off to the vets (AGAIN) for the once over. He was running a temperature and seemed to be fighting something. No biggy, we got some pills and headed home for some R&R.

A week later and the mood had lifted somewhat and someone's privates weren't so sore. I thought it best to return though for a check up. And what does the vet the nonchalantly say? You know he has a heart murmur, yes? Ehhh, NO. HHH has never had a whisper, a mutter or a murmur. But now he does! Poor wee dude has been stoically carrying on whilst having something wrong with his ticker. It's rather taken the wind out of my sails. My worst fear is that he's still poorly and this might get worse. Apparently dogs, like humans can have murmurs with no real side effects but still I worry. Fingers crossed that a week of taking it easy and some meds to combat Lyme disease (he was badly bitten by ticks on holiday in Balmoral)... ho hum. Waiting it out for the next appointment. Climbingmandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01520515442747384802noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25601534.post-40449471387482946862013-09-25T18:24:00.001+01:002013-09-25T18:25:22.854+01:00Harris the Munro Bagger

In my last post I threw down the gauntlet to Harris, to do something bloggable. As I have mentioned before Harris doesn't covet the limelight in quite the same way as another dog I know. We have just returned from holiday in Royal Deeside no less where we were staying by the beautiful Loch Muick on the Balmoral Estate. Harris and Horatio took to it like ducks to water, and yes, I am pleased to announce that Harris came up trumps with a newsworthy achievement. He bagged his first Munro* (Lochnagar). When given the option to come too, Horatio indicated a strong preference to hanging out at the Hut (aka, the holiday house), where second breakfast was being enjoyed.

The rest of the holiday was not without incident. The boys met the corgis. And I mean the Corgis. Unfortunately everyone else was so dumbfounded by the chance meeting, they forgot to collect photographic evidence. I was bitterly disappointed to have missed out such an attention from the Royal Household.

Of course the most exciting rendez vous of the trip was with Bouncing Bertie himself and his loyal companion Gail! In spite of some negative comments from Bertie re Horatio's increasing girth, much fun was had by all including us humans. Again photos were hard come by..

I stand accused of not including Harris in this blog. Poor Harris. He is just the sweetest most innocent Viszla in the world. Unquestioning devotion and love of me, food and going for a walk. He doesn't give attitude. Happy go lucky, he's fine with going with the flow as long as he is with you. The question is, how bloggable is this? Horatio is forever giving attitude and talking back. I have challenged Harris to do something of significance...

Summer arrived in Scotland over a month ago. Long days of heat. Sun. No rain. Quite amazing really. I had almost forgotten what it's like to have a proper summer at home. Cycling to work in shorts and sandals. No coat. No additional jumpers in case I get cold. Sun glasses become an essential item when leaving the house, along with house keys and poop bags. The boys are enjoying it for the most part. Except poor Horatio who is suffering in his heavy wool coat. We have pondered the merits of getting him clipped. He'd be much more comfortable and probably more like himself. However his colouring would grey... A selfish middle class dilemma. Just get the darn dog clipped and 'summer-ready' before the summer disappears!

So with some hesitation we have made an appointment with Jack the dog groomer in Liberton. To appease my concerns re colouring we are going for the more arduous, expensive and potentially less effective hand stripping. I doubt Horatio will care either way. It will be three hours of torture for the wee guy. He'll enjoy hill walking more afterwards. Nor will he smell like an old bath mat....

I think the prolonged cold weather has affected his olfactory skills. He has failed to handle a clear situation of insubordination.... this fox danders through our garden (on the right), sauntering past the veggie patch, the plant pots and Horatio's toys. And then to add insult to injury falls asleep in the neighbour's garden in the middle of the afternoon!!!
Top tip from Horatio.January has to be the toughest month out there. Why oh why do we rush to fit in Christmas at the end of December when there is still the prospect of three more dreary months with no fairy lights, Christmas trees, cheer etc? My suggestion is we push Christmas back by three weeks. That way, We'd have more time to enjoy that pre Christmas buzz and then the post Christmas funk wouldn't last so long.

Horatio has a different idea. You should YouTube WFT videos. The Guardian posted a corker this week:
He's house trained. He's going for walks with the dog walkers. He's still eating for Britain. However he's also bigger than Horatio who's now a teenager and dealing with all manner of angst. This reads as trouble.

Yes, there's lots of play fighting, wrestling and gnashing of teeth but in general the two wee guys love each other. Quiet moments like this make me feel all warm and fuzzy. However, as I said, Horatio is working through a few issues. Who am I? What is my position? Who is this upstart who now pushes me about? And why can he run faster than me when he puts his mind to it?

This all came to a head two weeks ago when I was (again) away with work. I call home to check everyone is behaving and am regaled a terrible tale of flying fur, gushing blood and a panicked trip to the vets (not another trip?!). Horatio, in all his wisdom has transferred his frustrations to inanimate objects, primarily balls, of which he is now quite possessive. Whilst out with his beloved dog walkers, Fran & Ellen, one of the gang nonchalantly thought he would join Horatio in playing ball. Big mistake. Thus ensued a dog fight. Yes a proper dog fight with both dogs going for each others' throats... And Horatio came of worse. The other dog must have knicked a blood vessel on his throat. Thankfully I have no photos. And even more thankfully the gushing did stop. By the time I got home there was nothing to see but a small shaved chin and a v small wound.

Horatio wanted it cool. He got cold. Think I better start knitting him a jumper. Something like this always happens when I go away. Usually it involves the vet though, so I should thank my lucky stars it's not more serious. Or sorry, I forgot. Harris had to be taken to the vets - he's got a stye. To go with his ear mites. He's only been with us for 14 days and already has two health complaints.

So if I'm not at home overseeing my boys where am I? Stuttgart! I've got a couple of work events on Monday and Tuesday so thought I'd take the opportunity to hang out with my twin. My visits to Stuttgart are more about seeing Fiona and her husband Mark but inevitably we fit in a packed schedule of running, cycling, eating sushi, cake and spaghetti ice cream, and shopping at Cos and Manufactum.

This time though we took in the new Bibliothek in downtown Stuttgart too. Located on the fringes of the highly contentious Stuttgart 21 project, this building is awesome. I'm not terribly au fait with my architecture - beyond Farrell, Foster and Hadid, I'm out of my depth, but I can appreciate a stunning building when I see it. White square box? Yes, I guess so. Inside though the space is like the interior of an Apple product. White. Efficient. Calm. And oh so cool. I loved the mechanical conveyor belt machine, which efficiently whisks books from one floor to the next. In years to come, people will marvel at the quaintness of a mechanical 'google' machine.
Why a library needs a large tranquil atrium with a small fountain in the middle, I don't know. But then, one could ask what is the future purpose of libraries as we further embrace the digital age. It put me in mind of the Panthenon. I guess they are cleverly giving the building additional purpose beyond books. The building itself is fabulous to explore. Members can borrow lap tops. There's a cafe on the top floor with views over Stuttgart. We even discovered the artwork library. For no fee, members can borrow works of art to display at home for six weeks at a time. Life in Europe's economic power house is good.
Ten days of chaos (for most of us). Sleep-deprivation (mine). Forgetfulness (also mine). Dog wrestling (Harris and Horatio). Piddling (Harris). But also some great fun (all). It does the soul good to see two dogs get to know each other. Testing out the boundaries, playing, exploring each others beds and dog wrestling. Harris isn't officially allowed out for another seven days until his booster kicks in. We've been a bit naughty though and taken both Horatio and Harris to near empty clean beaches for a run.
Our current favourite beach is Seacliff by North Berwick. Although it's £2 to get in, it's well worth it for the stunning views of the Bass rock, Tantallon castle and Scotland's smallest harbour.
And thus endeth another weekend. Work is unfortunately rather manic at the moment. This past week had me travelling up to Inverness for two days of meetings. I had secretly been relishing the thought of a night of unbroken sleep. Wrong. I stupidly left my iPad on the train and spent a fretful night worrying and chastising myself for my stupidity. There is a happy ending though. Some honest soul handed it in to the guard and after some foot stamping and persistence on my part, I called several stations on the route back to Edinburgh and found it!! Thank you to my guardian angel.

Needless to say, the last 24 hours have been entertaining, manic but also somewhat focused. The regimented routine of taking someone out to the garden for piddles, makes time drag. Horatio needs his walks more than ever lest he feels neglected and second best. He's recovering from another toe nail operation - this time to have it completely removed along with half his toe! August has been a rather demanding month. Roll on the next three weeks til Harris can go out for walkies!! I'll keep you posted.Climbingmandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01520515442747384802noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25601534.post-86581190266785767022012-08-24T07:20:00.000+01:002012-08-24T07:21:25.875+01:00HarrisThe Isle of Harris, from the old Norse meaning 'high land,' is often described as the 'high heart of the Hebrides'. The East coast is a dramatic, rocky landscape, where it it hard to imagine how people managed to scrape a living from the land and the sea, whereas the West coast is breathtakingly beautiful more conventionally, with miles of golden sandy beaches and fertile machair soil with stunning mountainous backdrops. Horatio keeps asking what summer is. He has vague memories of last year as a young pup lounging in the sun shine. On his day bed in the garden. Warmth on his woolly coat. But he was very young, so it's all a bit misty for him. The last six weeks have seen us all wonder if the end is nye. Scott has even contacted someone regarding an ark. I mean a boat. We were therefore all rather taken aback when the sun made a long overdue appearance this week. Eyes a-blinking, we hot footed it to Gullane, three days in a row for walks and swims. There's nothing as rewarding as falling into bed at night, exhausted after a day of sandy fun. Swim-stuff swinging on the washing line in anticipation of more adventures tomorrow.
Where will we go today?
Climbingmandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01520515442747384802noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25601534.post-17202885144996676172012-06-11T09:16:00.000+01:002012-06-11T09:17:39.161+01:00Weather forecast - fact or fiction?I've long suspected you shouldn't live your life by the weather forecast. This weekend was no exception. I avidly follow the Met Office App to help determine whether I can cycle to work or not (for 'lady-like cycling' this is essentially). By Friday afternoon the weekend appeared to be a write-off. My sun burnt nose, forehead and shoulders this Monday morning tell a different story. I forced myself out for a 'long' 13-mile run to Gullane on Saturday and committed the school-girl error of not being prepared for every weather eventuality in Scotland. To help cope with my itchy sun burn, I also got myself a bee sting. Ouch.

Admittedly it tipped it down Saturday night but Sunday then dawned .... dryish so we hopped in the car and headed to St Abbs for a cliff walk. Scott's new camera (and subsequent new lense) are keeping him very amused and providing plenty of material for me.
Too much time. Which begs the question, can I still call this a blog. Perhaps a blong is better given how long it takes me to post.
I can't possibly list all that I've been up to since Horatio's birthday. Suffice to say work has been high on the priority list. The Spring and Autumn tend to be really mad with regards workload and travel. There's one major trip left this side of the summer and unfortunately, it's a biggy. IMEX in Frankfurt which kicks off a week on Tuesday.

To more pleasant thoughts though. Scott, Horatio and I have just returned from a marvellous holiday in Royal Deeside. We travelled en famille to a holiday cottage on the Balmoral Estate. For those not in the know, Queenie spends her summer holidays every year in Balmoral Castle. We were staying in what Queen Victoria called 'The Hut'. Funny hut that sleeps 13, has a working bell system to call for servants (latter not provided) and boasts two 'gutting' rooms plus larder to hang the kill... Oh, and this was the view out the front door.
I tried my best to chill and not aggrievate my hip injury by running too much. It was difficult given how beautiful the surroundings were.
One highlight of the trip was meeting up with Gail and Bouncing Bertie. Horatio and Bertie get on like a house on fire and must have covered twice the distance we did by chasing each other. Their encounter deserves a whole post in itself. Watch this space.
To mark the occasion I've created a wee album of his first year (I was inspired by Asta's album yesterday on smilebox). Here's to the next twelve months my lad!
